Efficient entanglement length measurements for photonic cluster state sources

We present a procedure for confirming the generation of long strings of photons in an entangled (cluster) state that does not rely on complete state tomography and that works even at low collection efficiencies. The scheme has the added advantage of being passive - it does not require switching of optical elements to perform measurements in different bases for instance.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Comment on `Quantum resolution to the arrow of time dilemma'

Recently, a substantial amount of debate has grown up around a proposed quantum resolution to the `arrow of time dilemma' that is based on the role of classical memory records of entropy-decreasing events. In this note we show that the argument is incomplete and furthermore, by providing a counter-example, argue that it is incorrect. Instead of quantum mechanics providing a resolution in the manner suggested, it allows enhanced classical memory records of entropy-decreasing events.Comment: 4 pages, no figures. Comments welcom

How Einstein and/or Schr\"odinger should have discovered Bell's Theorem in 1936

We show how one can be led from considerations of quantum steering to Bell's theorem. We begin with Einstein's demonstration that, assuming local realism, quantum states must be in a many-to-one ("incomplete") relationship with the real physical states of the system. We then consider some simple constraints that local realism imposes on any such incomplete model of physical reality, and show they are not satisfiable. In particular, we present a very simple demonstration for the absence of a local hidden variable incomplete description of nature by steering to two ensembles, one of which contains a pair of non-orthogonal states. Historically this is not how Bell's theorem arose - there are slight and subtle differences in the arguments - but it could have been.Comment: Minor changes to v1, new footnote [8] and reference [19] adde
